Charlotte Grade 7th October 13, 2010 Writing the story helped Max realize that Kevin wasn’t really gone. He still existed in Max’s mind and heart. It reminded Max of all the great memories that Kevin and he had together. Max learned that he has to cherish those moments and move on with Kevin existing in his brain and heart. Kevin helped him understand things that other teachers, parents, and friends couldn’t teach him. He learned to love and to feel for other people again.
Colby 7 This helped Max because he is not a good writer to start with. Max writes better as he gets further into the story. Max stays up at night writing. To me this means that he has become a good writer. Max becomes a good writer after he begins the story, and this helps him in school. To me Max seems to like writing once he starts the story. Kevin wanted Max to become a good writer so I think that is why Kevin gave him the book. By the end of the book Max becomes an overall good writer and I think that he likes to write after that.
I think writing this story helped Max deal with Kevin’s death. Once Kevin died Max’s world changed and he didn’t want to do anything simply because Kevin wasn’t there. Then Max found the book Kevin gave him on his death bed, and everything changed. He would stay up writing this story for days, telling the story about the adventures he had with Kevin. Max learned that he wasn’t L.D. and that Kevin helped him figure that out. Writing this story helped Max discover that he could do anything he put his mind to. Kevin helped Max in so many different ways and writing this book helped Max have closure on Kevin’s death. This story helped him become a better person and learn that he loved to learn different thing and write.

I think it helped Max because writing his story made him feel like he really did have a brain even if Kevin wasn’t around anymore. Max also figured out that he really is a good reader and writer by writing the story. Also I think that writing a story about his and Kevin’s adventures or “Quests” gave Max closure about Kevin’s death. I felt that Max really let go when he was writing, he just followed what the pencil was writing. Plus I don’t know if it was just me or that writing the story for Max really improved his self confidence of his academic knowledge. That was what I think writing the story has done for Max.
Writing his story helped Max by letting him get all of his feelings out instead of keeping his feelings bottled up inside. After Max wrote the story he came out of the down under rather than staying locked up in there. I think Max finally got closure after writing the story and he was able to move on. Max also discovered he had a brain and the movie showed him answering a question in class and usually he just sits there. When he got called on it seemed like everyone rolled their eyes or snickered but then he answered the question correctly and they stopped. The teacher was very proud of him.

When Max received the blank book from Kevin, he didn’t think that he could write a story. After Kevin dies, Max becomes very depressed. But finally, he decides to take out the blank book and he started writing whatever popped up in his head. I think that by doing this Max felt better because it reminded him of the good memories he and Kevin had. It also reminded him to explore the world and not to just sit in his room. It also helped him to feel better about what happened to Kevin and Max’s dad. So, those are the reasons that I think writing a story helped Max.
I believe that writing this story helped Max realize that he didn’t really have any problems, it was probably just all in his head. In the beginning he didn’t think that he could read a book, but he did, so that probably gave him some self esteem. Writing the book, about all the idea’s and memories that Max had all stuck inside of him,was a way of letting them out, and just getting them off his chest and out of his mind. Writing the book, could be a way of closure, and instead of staying sad just letting it all out in his writing, could have been his way of venting. If you keep the thoughts and feelings inside, you will never get over it, and you could be depressed & not learn or be able to be happy again. For Max being able to write that story, and just keep going instead of giving up when it gets tough,he kept with it, and kept going. By writing whatever popped into his head he was able to finish, and be proud of his product.

I think writing the story helped Max because it brought memories back of when him and Freak went on adventures. It also made him realize that he can write if he just writes his thoughts in his head on paper. It probably made Max feel better about himself too, because that’s what Freak wanted him to do he wanted Max to write about the adventures he had with Freak. Now that he wrote the book he can share his stories with other people and show them what a smart and great kid Freak was. I’m sure every time Max reads that book he’ll feel better about writing it because he’ll be able remember all the great memories he had with Freak.
Great comments students! You had very insightful thoughts. I think many of you show true compassion and understanding for our two protagonists, Max and Kevin.
